Forest preserve offers cast-iron cooking lessons

Outdoor explorers can get a taste of cast-iron cooking during programs from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 23, at the cabin at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton.

Participants should park in the main lot on Butterfield Road two miles west of Naperville Road and follow the signs to the cabin.

Participants will help prepare a hearty meal over an open campfire using cast-iron cookware. They’ll learn tips for cooking with this durable material, including safety practices for use on open flames and modifications for using outdoor recipes at home. Everyone will taste the results of their efforts and then learn proper cleanup techniques that will keep pans in great shape for decades.

“Cast iron can be used for anything from main dishes to breads to desserts. The menu for our January session, for instance, includes chicken chili with white beans, macaroni and cheese, and skillet s’mores,” says Christina Adcock, a senior ranger with the district and the program’s leader. “We hope everyone goes home with full stomachs and inspiration!”

Cast-iron cooking classes are for ages 5 and older, but adults must accompany children younger than 18. The program is $10 per person for ages 13 and older and $5 for kids. Register in advance by calling Visitor Services at (630) 933-7248.
