Hersey Jazz wins at Purdue Jazz Festival

The John Hersey High School Jazz Band 1, of Arlington Heights, earned the top score in their room and the title “Honor Band” at the Purdue Jazz Festival on Jan. 18 in Lafayette, Ind.

Hersey senior Kevin Kapinos, on trombone, was one of two musicians from the room named “Outstanding Soloist.”

In addition, Hersey's Jazz 2 earned an “Outstanding Performance” title and second place in their room.

More than 2,000 students representing more than 100 bands participated in the event.

In addition to competing, students heard performances from two Grammy nominees, the band “Snarky Puppy” and saxophonist Danny McCaslin.
