Weight and see at Mooseheart

The 28th annual Bridge Breaking contest, one of the longest-running traditions at Moosheart, took place Friday.

As with the previous 27 contests, this year’s was under the direction of physics teacher Curt Schlinkmann, who is in his 40th year at Mooseheart. Each student worked through Christmas vacation on a balsawood-and-glue construction from wood provided by Schlinkmann.

In the contest, the bridges had block-and-tackle attached, from which a bucket is suspended. Weight was added to the bucket until the bridge breaks. The winning entry was based on a combination of the weight of the bridge and the weight held by the bridge when it broke.

Mooseheart senior Rocio Sanchez, 17, watchers her balsa wood bridge slowly collapse beneath 4,100 grams or nine pounds of weights during Friday’s 28th annual Bridge Breaking contest. Sanchez came in second place. Laura Stoecker/lstoecker@dailyherald.com
