Landfill to help pay medical bills after leak
SYCAMORE, Ill. — Waste Management landfill officials say they’ll help pay medical bills after an odor from their landfill sickened more than 60 students, teachers and staff at a northern Illinois school.
Dale Hoekstra is director of operators for the Illinois/Missouri Valley post collection operations for Waste Management. The Daily Chronicle reported that he says the landfill is putting together a plan to avoid the incident from happening again.
The dozens of people and children were sent to the hospital Tuesday morning from Cortland Elementary School outside DeKalb. Doctors say they were treated for low levels of carbon monoxide exposure.
Hoekstra says the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency inspected the site Wednesday. Results from that inspection are not yet available.
