New dog park needs name

A joint venture between Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights park districts will result in a dog park at Melas Park in Mount Prospect.

A public meeting held Thursday, Jan. 9, presented conceptual drawings of the dog park and took questions from residents. Now, park district officials are sniffing around for a name for the new canine facility and asking for public input with naming suggestions.

Members of the public can submit names online to staff at both park districts at www.mppd.org and www.ahpd.org between Jan. 20 and Feb. 3. From the entries, three names will be selected by Feb. 14, and at that time, residents will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. Park district staff will reveal the winning name in early March.

The dog park will encompass 1.82 acres of fenced land for canines to play and run. The space will also feature a shade canopy, benches, waste containers and bag dispensers. A total of 500 annual memberships will be sold beginning in May at both park districts. A grand opening is scheduled for June with additional details to follow.

Melas Park is located at 1500 W. Central Road, Mount Prospect. Regulations governing the dog park can be found on each park district’s website.
