Anat Cohen to headline NIU's Feb. 1 Clarinet Cornucopia

Advance purchase tickets are now available for an on-campus performance by world-renowned jazz clarinetist Anat Cohen, scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1

Known for her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence, Cohen and her band perform on the Concert Hall stage in the NIU Music Building. The $20 concert ticket allows admission to two jazz master classes that Cohen will conduct following the concert.

Cohen, an internationally known artist voted “Clarinetist of the Year” for six consecutive years by the Jazz Journalists Association, is considered to be one of the preeminent jazz performers of her generation. Her albums have garnered praise from Downbeat, the New York Times and National Public Radio.

Born in Israel, she attended the Tel Aviv School for the Arts, the Jaffa Music Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The 2012 Multi-Reeds Player of the Year has performed at many of the the leading jazz venues in the United States and around the world, including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

Cohen is the featured performer and clinician at the 2014 NIU Clarinet Cornucopia, a festival that each year focuses on a different voice and mood of the clarinet.

Organized by NIU School of Music clarinet professor Gregory Barrett, the event includes a clarinet choir and master classes for beginning and more experienced clarinetists. The event is open to all clarinetists and should be of special interest to high school, college and university students, as well as vocational and professional clarinetists.

Tickets are available online for both Clarinet Cornucopia and for those who want to attend only the Anat Cohen concert and jazz master classes.

Clarinet Cornucopia has received financial support from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the Arts Education in American Communities program. High school and NIU students receive free admission to Clarinet Cornucopia and to the concert with proof of student status.
