Clare Woods Academy students paint birdhouses for downtown Wheaton tree

Even though the holidays are over, a Christmas tree in Wheaton’s Martin Memorial Plaza will stay standing — as it does every year — until early March as a bird sanctuary.

This winter, the birds will be able to enjoy the tree and some wooden birdhouses that were painted and hung on the tree’s branches by special needs students at Clare Woods Academy.

The school moved into the former St. John Lutheran School in Wheaton last year after serving students for more than 40 years in Bartlett.

About 100 students gathered last week in the plaza to show off their creations — which feature images of favorite pets, colors, family members and activities — and present them to the Downtown Wheaton Association.

“This was a fun and wonderful collaboration with the students of Clare Woods Academy,” Paula Barrington, executive director of the Downtown Wheaton Association, said in a statement. “We are very pleased to welcome Clare Woods Academy to downtown Wheaton, and this birdhouse project is a wonderful way for students to be involved in the community.”
