Brust a big part of Badgers’ success
Ben Brust has helped the country’s No. 4 ranked Division I basketball team make school history.
The Wisconsin guard, a former standout for Mundelein, scored a team-high 18 points when the Badgers defeated No. 23 Illinois 95-70 last Wednesday.
That win gave Wisconsin a 16-0 record, its best start in school history.
Brust is easily the Badgers’ leaders in 3-point baskets.
He has 46 (next closest on the team is 21) heading into Tuesday’s game at Indiana.
Brust is the Badgers’ third-leading scorer at 13.1 points per game. He is also third on the team with 26 assists and tied for third with 11 steals.
His .941 free throw percentage (32-of-34) is also tops for coach Bo Ryan’s Badgers, who are 3-0 in the Big Ten.
The 6-foot-1 senior is one of the most prolific long-range shooters in UW history.
Brust set the Wisconsin single-season record with 79 3s last season and equaled a single-game school record by tossing in seven 3-pointers on two separate occasions during his sophomore season.
As a senior at Mundelein, the Hawthorn Woods native was a second-team all-state pick by the AP and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He averaged 24.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.1 steals per game during that senior season, topping the 40-point mark on four occasions.
Men’s track
Augustana senior Will Lardner (Mundelein) placed third in the pole vault with a clearance of 13-5¼ when the Vikings began their 2014 in the Augie Opener held jointly in the PepsiCo
Center and the Carver Center on the Augustana campus.
Freshman teammate AJ Wright (Buffalo Grove) finished second in the shot put at 39-1¼ in the same meet.
Women’s basketball
Augustana freshman Olivia Mayer (Libertyville) has a team-high 53 assists for coach Mark Beinborn’s Vikings.
In a 66-54 loss at Wheaton, Vikings junior Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville)had the assist on sophomore Maddie Kerr’s 3-pointer which gave Augustana a 42-37 lead with 11:50 left in the game.
Women’s soccer
North Central College senior midfielder Rachel Houp (Barrington)was recently honored on the 2013-2014 Fall Academic All-College of Illinois-Wisconsin team.
Houp played in 14 games this past season. She started in 12 and finished with 8 shots on goal.
Football
North Central defensive back Richard Zirngibl, graduate of Buffalo Grove High School, earned Academic All-CCIW honors for the Fall 2013 season.
Zirngibl, a sophomore, played in all 14 games at safety, earning a start against North Park. He recorded 37 tackles (26 solo), including 2.5 tackles for loss.
He also intercepted a pass and broke up five others while recording a season-high 6 tackles on two occasions.
Premier Basketball League
Former Wheeling standout Chris McClellan scored 14 points for Bloomington as the two-time defending champion Flex won its season opener 110-89 over the visiting Indianapolis Diesels on Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
Men’s basketball
Senior guard Alan Aboona (St. Viator) had 18 points and 7 assists for No. 7-ranked Washington University as the Bears opened University Athletic Association play with an 80-69 win over the University of Chicago at the WU Field House in St. Louis.
Aboona was 5-of-7 from the field and made 7 of 8 free throws.
Teammate Chris Klimek (Fremd) had 10 points and 7 rebounds as the Bears improved to 10-2.
Relay For Life
On Jan. 18, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Mt. Prospect/Wheeling will hold its kickoff event at Wheeling High School during the Wheeling-Prospect sophomore and varsity basketball games from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
A kickoff event will also be held at Prospect High School on Feb. 7 during the Prospect-Wheeling sophomore and varsity basketball games from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Registration will be available for teams and individuals for this year’s Relay For Life event, which will be held May 16-17 at Prospect High School.
There will also be raffle prizes and a 50-50 raffle.
