1 dead, 1 presumed dead after falling into icy river

Authorities say one person died, another is presumed dead and a third was hospitalized after they fell into the icy Chicago River early Monday morning — a tragedy that started with a dropped cellphone.

Chicago police said a 26-year-old man died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital early Monday after he was pulled from the water. He had jumped over a fence downtown to retrieve a cellphone he’d dropped in the water.

A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman tried to help their friend but fell in after him.

Rescuers pulled the men from the water but spent hours Monday looking for the woman, who is presumed dead. Officer Hector Alfaro said Monday evening that search has ended for the day and recovery efforts will resume Tuesday morning.

Police spokeswoman Amina Greer said the 23-year-old is in stable condition at St. Joseph Hospital. The Chicago Sun-Times reported the 26-year-old who died is from St. Paul, Minn.
