Lake Villa Twp. man’s killer gets life sentence

A Lake Villa Township man’s killer was sentenced to life in prison Friday in Florida.

William Christopher Pettry, 42, was murdered by Matthew Hinson inside a Jacksonville pub Oct. 7, 2012. Pettry was in town for the Bears’ game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was a married father of three children ages 5, 13 and 15.

Hinson slashed Pettry’s throat with a pocket knife inside Fionn MacCool’s Irish Pub and Restaurant. Hinson became “jealous” and “enraged” after seeing his wife talking to Pettry and sliced his throat while the two men sat on a bench, police said.

According to WJXT News in Jacksonville, Hinson said in court Friday that he takes full responsibility for the crime and was drunk at the time.

“I’m sorry for taking away your husband, father, brother and son. I’m so very sorry,” said Hinson, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in May.
