Boys basketball: Week 5 MVP

Cary-Grove junior guard Jason Gregoire has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent boys basketball performances.

Jason Gregoire, Cary-Grove: The 6-foot-3 junior guard helped Cary-Grove to 3-2 showing at the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs with a pair of career-best games. The returning all-area pick set a new career high with 36 points in a 59-50 win over Rockford Jefferson and matched it with 36 more in an 83-80 loss to South Elgin in the consolation ‘A’ championship game. Named all-tournament, Gregoire sank 13 3-pointers and scored 128 points in 5 games, 8 shy of the 2008 record of 136 points set by Ben Brust of Mundelein.

Tyler Carlson, Kaneland: The 6-foot-3 senior guard averaged a double-double, helping the Knights go 2-1. Ending an all-tourney effort at Plano, Carlson scored 12 points with 10 rebounds and 19 points with 13 boards in wins over Mendota and Dixon, respectively. He added 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 54-51 loss to Geneva.

Bobby Krebs, Grayslake North: The sophomore guard has emerged as a starter in his first varsity season, and it’s no wonder after his performance against Crystal Lake Central. He poured in a season-high 22 points, hitting six 3-pointers, as the Knights opened the new year with a 71-50 victory.

Matt Rafferty, Hinsdale Central: The Red Devils finished sixth in the prestigious Proviso West Holiday Tournament as Rafferty stepped up to earn second-team all-tourney honors during a 4-1 outing. The 6-foot-7 junior forward averaged 21.4 points and 11.6 rebounds a game while shooting 66 percent from the field.

Joe Ranallo, Conant: The 6-foot senior guard helped Conant to a 3-1 performance in York’s holiday tournament and scored in double figures in each game. He had 10 points in a win over Rolling Meadows, 26 in a second-round loss to Lyons, a game-high 18 against Providence and finished the tourney with 16 points as the Cougars erupted for 91 points to topple Riverside-Brookfield.
