30 National Guard mechanics activated due to weather

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Army National Guard says more than 30 of its mechanics were activated to help during this week’s subzero temperatures and snowfall.

Guard officials say soldiers from Champaign, Crestwood, Galva, Joliet, North Riverside and Springfield were deployed on Wednesday. They are helping the Illinois Department of Transportation fix and maintain equipment. The soldiers will assist until Friday.

On Monday 15 soldiers were activated to help pull vehicles and semitrailer trucks from snow.
