Elk Grove man deemed fit to stand trial

TULSA, Okla. — A Elk Grove Village man charged with plotting to bomb dozens of northeastern Oklahoma churches has been found mentally competent to stand trial.

Prosecutors accused Gregory Weiler II of plotting to bomb 48 churches in Ottawa County, though no one was injured and no explosives were set off. Weiler was found mentally incompetent last April and was committed to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.

U.S. Magistrate Paul Cleary ruled this week that Weiler is now competent to stand trial. Weiler’s attorney, Stephen Greubel, told the Tulsa World that Weiler was restored to competence through medication.

Weiler has pleaded not guilty to one count of possessing an unregistered, destructive device. In a court filing Wednesday, Weiler requested his trial be before a judge, rather than a jury.
