Burglars hit Mundelein jewelry store that offered Jan. 1 snow deal
A Mundelein jewelry store that’s been in the news because of a failed snowfall promotion was burglarized Tuesday morning.
A pair of thieves smashed the front door at P.K. Bennett Jewelers, 742 S. Butterfield Road, and then stole merchandise from inside the store. The break-in occurred about 7:15 a.m. while the store was closed, Mundelein police said.
“It’s horrible,” co-owner Peggy Bennett said. “I’m just glad no one was here and no one was hurt.”
The burglary took about two minutes, Mundelein police said. It was captured on video surveillance.
The thieves passed by some cases and smashed open others, Bennett said.
“There’s glass everywhere,” she said.
The store will be closed for a few days to get the mess cleaned up.
The store garnered media attention in the waning days of 2013 because of a customer promotion. If it snowed more than 3 inches between midnight and noon on New Year’s Day, participating customers who purchased jewelry between Black Friday and Christmas Eve would get refunds.
Unfortunately for those customers, the store’s insurance company ruled not enough snow fell for the giveaway to occur.
Descriptions of the burglars were not available Tuesday. A loss estimate had not yet been determined, police said.
