The La Crosse Tribune reports 21-year-old Ellen Ahmann, a Winona State University senior studying finance, was driving sometime after 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve when her car failed to make a curve and plunged down a 40-foot embankment onto Isle La Plume Slough.

She did not immediately break through. She drove until she reached thin ice and her car plunged through.

According to the La Crosse County Medical Examiner's office, results from blood work that will reveal drug and alcohol levels could take at least three weeks.
