Albright Theatre to hold auditions for Albee classic

Submitted by Albright Theatre Company

The Albright Theatre Company will hold auditions for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, and Monday, Jan. 6, at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. in Batavia. There will be callbacks, by invitation only, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7.

The Tony Award-winning play was written by American playwright Edward Albee.

The performances will be Feb. 28 to March 15.

After more than a few drinks, George and Martha return home from a party when Martha announces that she has invited a young couple in for a nightcap. Their guests are Nick, an opportunistic new professor (who teaches at the same college as George), and Nick’s naive new bride, Honey. When they arrive the charade begins!

Drinks flow and inhibitions melt, but all seems to be fun and games until the edgy banter reveals too much. Behind the salty laughter and thinly veiled innuendo is a dark undercurrent of tragedy and despair.

The cast consists of two men and two women.

Martha is a boisterous, vicious-tongued, domineering woman who is angry, frustrated and unfulfilled. She is at once a vixen and a shrew. Age range 40s to early 60s.

George is Martha’s husband, slightly younger than her, a middle-aged history professor whose life and career have been full of disappointments. It’s because of his sharp wit and intelligence that he can ward off Martha’s attacks. Age range late 30s to late 50s.

Nick is a competitive and ambitious new professor of biology. Although he seems to be well intentioned, he is also ruthlessly deceptive. Age range late 20s to 30s.

Honey is the submissive, doll-like wife of Nick. Her naive, child-like talk induces other characters to recount their stories, yet she remains unaffected by the verbal dueling. Age range 20s to early 30s.

The rehearsal schedule will be determined by the director and is subject to the availability of the cast and crew.

The Albright Theatre Company is a nonprofit organization that is membership driven and relies upon volunteer actors. For details, email info@albrighttheatre.com or visit www.albrighttheatre.com/auditions/index.html;http://www.albrighttheatre.com/auditions/index.html.
