New director named to Illinois torture commission

A former assistant U.S. attorney has been named executive director of an Illinois commission investigating allegations of torture by Chicago police months after the previous director resigned over criticisms the panel wasn’t properly reporting cases.

Barry Miller will become executive director of the Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission starting Thursday. That’s according to a commission statement emailed Monday.

Miller is a graduate of Harvard Law School and has served as university attorney at Harvard for the past four years. From 2000 to 2009 he was assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago.

Miller will take over after David Thomas resigned in September. He stepped down after facing scrutiny because the panel wasn’t alerting relatives of murder victims that the victims’ cases were being examined. The law requires the commission do so.
