Chicago's Drake Hotel gets new lighted sign

One of the more noticeable sites along Chicago's Lake Shore Drive has gotten a face lift.

WBEZ radio reports that the Drake Hotel's bright, gothic-scripted sign has been renovated. Now, instead of neon, it's made with LED lights that shine light purple instead of pink.

Drake Hotel property director Hank Hawerbier says it was getting difficult to maintain the old sign. He says letters would short out because of ice, strong winds and rain.

Hawerbrier says the hotel went to lengths to choose the best LED sign it could find. Still, he says, “the color is off a few shades.”

He says much of the old sign is still there. That includes the frame and background of the letters, which are as high as 11-feet tall.
