St. Viator, Fremd roll past first-round Wheeling foes
St. Viator senior Ore Arogundade produced a double-double with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds to help the Lions rolls past Hope Academy 79-48 in a Hardwood Classic first-round boys basketball game on Monday at Wheeling.
Roosevelt Smart contributed 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals for St. Viator (10-1), which plays Deerfield in a 5:30 p.m. second-round game Thursday.
Pat McNamara scored 12 points for St. Viator, which led 16-13 at the first quarter before outscoring Hope 29-11 in the second.
The Lions shot 26-for-46 from the floor in the game.
Fremd 74, Alcott 32: Senior Riley Glassmann led all scorers with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field as the Vikings overwhelmed their first-round opponent at Wheeling.
Unbeaten Fremd (10-0) meets Niles North in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
Fremd outrebounded Alcott 37-16 and held the opponent to 10-for-28 shooting from the floor.
Xavier Williams and Ben Carlson both finished with 9 points as the Vikings made 23 of 32 shots.
Deerfield 54, Lake Park 42: The Warriors trailed by 6 points at the half but outscored the Lancers 20-7 in the third quarter and 18-13 in the fourth to earn a championship quarterfinal appearance against St. Viator on Thursday.
Senior guard Eric Porter and senior forward Stefanos Fasianos led Deerfield with 12 points apiece.
Junior forward Michael Karas led the way for Lake Park with 11 points, including 7-for-7 at the foul line.
Glenbrook South 62, Notre Dame 41: Senior guard Danny Nikitas shot 4-for-6 from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 22 points to help the Titans earn a championship quarterfinal matchup against Prospect at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.
Senior forward Devin Maki had 12 points for Glenbrook South, while junior guard Joe Mooney led the way for Notre Dame.
Niles North 61, Clark 43: Senior guard Duante Stephens scored a game-high 17 points as the Vikings outscored Clark in each period.
Sophomore guard Crishawn Cook was 4 of 5 from the field, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, for Niles North, which meets Fremd in a 7:15 p.m. quarterfinal Thursday.
Clark, which meets Alcott in a consolation bracket game at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, got to the free-throw line 38 times but made only 22 shots. The Eagle were led by 12 points from 12 points from junior forward Kevin Sharpe.
