Greer gets Deerfield in gear against Warren

Haley Greer showed why she is one of the top players in the Central Suburban League.

The returning all-conference sophomore led all scorers with 17 points to lead Deerfield to a 57-43 win over host Warren in an opening-round game of the Blue Devil Classic on Saturday.

“Haley does a great job both shooting and distributing the ball,” Deerfield coach Mike Muldrow said.

Warren’s Haily Leinart popped in a jumper from the foul line and Kristen Jacobs finished a layup to give the Blue Devils a 4-2 lead in the game’s opening two minutes. But Margot Sylvan swished in a 3-pointer and Deerfield scored 12 unanswered points to lead 14-4 after the first quarter.

The Warriors stretched their lead to 22-6 midway in the in the second. Kylie Nedelka’s 3-pointer helped Warren roar back with a 13-4 run, and the Blue Devils trailed 26-19 at halftime.

“We started strong,” Muldrow said. “I think the first quarter we played very well, and then we stuck to our fundamentals and the style of play that we’ve been working hard on.”

Deerfield was up 36-20 midway through the third quarter and never looked back.

“We got a little slow and we didn’t play up to our potential,” Greer said. “But then at halftime we came out hard.”

Sylvan contributed 15 points and Kathryn Hoffman added 10 for Deerfield. Monica Fishbein had 8 points and 8 rebounds, as Deerfield outrebounded Warren 34-18. The Warriors grabbed 18 offensive boards.

“(Fishbein) has been working really hard in getting to the post and did some great rebounding today,” Muldrow said.

Nedelka led the Blue Devils with 12 points. Jacobs scored 8 points and pulled down 6 rebounds.

“I’m happy with the way our kids who came off the bench played today. They played with good energy as a group,” Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said. “I didn’t think we came out with very good energy. We just couldn’t guard anybody. (Deerfield) just shot the ball real well, and I think a lot of that was because they had time and space to get shots off.”
