UIC falls to UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Nick Gruninger made a game-winning layup with 2.6 seconds remaining to lead UC Riverside past Illinois-Chicago 57-56 on Friday night.

Gruninger’s game-winner came after Kelsey Barlow hit a go-ahead jumper for Illinois-Chicago with nine seconds left.

Chris Patton led UC Riverside (4-6) with 15 points while Taylor Johns added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Gruninger finished with 11 points.

Illinois-Chicago (5-7) trailed 40-30 with under 16 minutes to play but went on a 20-6 run to build a four-point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

UC Riverside regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Sam Finley with 3:09 left, putting the Highlanders up 55-54. Neither team scored after that until the game’s final nine seconds.

Barlow led the Flames with 17 points.
