Mental exam ordered for accused grandmother

A South suburban woman will undergo a psychiatric exam to find if she fit to go to trial on charges she killed her 6-month-old granddaughter in October.

The Southtown Star reported 62-year-old Alfreda Giedrojc was in court Wednesday. She is being held without bail. Prosecutors say the Oak Lawn woman used a sledgehammer and knife to kill the infant.

Assistant Public Defender Michael Wilson asked for the mental evaluation. He says he has doubts about whether Giedrojc is fit for trial.

Prosecutors asked for access to Giedrojc’s medical records. The judge granted that request.

She is next due in court Jan. 29.
