DePaul defeats Houston Baptist 78-58

ROSEMONT — Cleveland Melvin scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead DePaul to a 78-58 win Wednesday night over Houston Baptist on the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary coach Ray Meyer.

Tommy Hamilton IV added 14 and Brandon Young had 11 for DePaul (7-4), which has won three straight and four of five.

Melvin had his third double-double of the season and second in a row, helping DePaul overcome a night when it shot 40.3 percent. That, however, was offset by Houston Baptist shooting just 23 of 61 (37.7 percent).

Cody Joyce led Houston Baptist (3-8) with 14 points and Rob Lewis had 11. The Huskies have lost three straight and seven of their last nine and play Saturday at Pepperdine.

On Wednesday, the Blue Demons honored the Hall of Fame coach who led them for 42 seasons and died in March 2006 at age 92.
