Hospital coalition gets $7M grant for data network

An Illinois health care coalition has been awarded a $7 million federal grant to set up a clinical data research network.

The coalition includes 20 health and hospital organizations that will pool data from more than 1 million patients. That way researchers can collaborate to figure out how to improve cooperation and health outcomes for health problems such as asthma and diabetes.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced the grant on Tuesday.

The money will be used over 18 months, and was awarded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. That group was established by Congress to conduct research.

The collaborative effort will be coordinated and administered by the Chicago Community Trust and the Illinois Medical District Commission.
