New Trier top seed at Dundee-Crown
The Christmas tournament season is upon us and the pairing were released Thursday for the 31st Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown, as well as the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North and for the Montini Christmas tournament.
At Dundee-Crown, undefeated New Trier is the No. 1 seed, while Evanston, Prospect and Barrington also drew top four seeds.
The tournament will tip off at 10 a.m. on Dec. 26 with Hononegah facing Buffalo Grove. Other first-round matchups include Evanston taking on Naperville Central, Bartlett facing Prospect and Maine South meeting Stevenson in the top half of the bracket.
In the bottom half of the bracket, St. Charles North meets New Trier, Maine West takes on Resurrection, Charger Classic newcomer Burlington Central faces Mother McAuley and Dundee-Crown plays Barrington.
At Wheaton North: Elgin drew No. 6 seed Hinsdale Central in the first round of the Falcon Classic and will face the Red Devils at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23. Jacobs drew No. 8 Glenbard South for a 6 p.m. game that same day. Hersey is the No. 1 seed, Downers Grove North No. 2, Willowbrook No. 3 and West Aurora No. 4.
At Montini: The star-studded Montini tournament will begin on Monday, Dec. 23 and South Elgin drew a tough first-rounder against Fremd in a 4:45 p.m. game. That contest will be followed with Huntley playing Geneva in the first round. If the Storm should beat Fremd they could play Montini, one of the top Class 3A teams in the state in the quarterfinals. The host Broncos open with Oak Park-River Forest. Huntley, meanwhile, could see defending Class 4A state champion and top-ranked Marian Catholic in the quarterfinals. Neuqua Valley, Rolling Meadows, Batavia and Trinity are among the other top teams at Montini.
Doby all volleyball now: Harvest Christian senior Sydney Doby found basketball and preparation for college volleyball too much to juggle, so she has left the Lions’ basketball team. The 6-foot-2 Doby, who led Harvest to three straight Class 1A Elite Eight appearances in volleyball, will play volleyball on scholarship at Division II Grand Valley State.
