Hersey prevails; Maine West’s Connor sets team record

Hersey won Tuesday’s boys swimming dual meet at Maine West, but there was plenty for both teams to be happy about as the Warriors had their first meet of the season.

Maine West senior Michael Connor beat his own team record in the 200-yard freestyle, winning that race in 1:46.95 — a little less than two seconds away from the state-qualifying time standard. Connor also won the 100 fly (55.64) and joined Tony Connor, Chris Hernandez and Sebastian Hernandez on the winning 400 free relay.

Hersey had too much depth at the varsity level, though, and won 122-62. Connor Reynolds, Paul Kim, Jack Carroll and Michael Buffa each won races, and David Kuntz, Carroll and Jimmy Schumann finished 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke.

The Huskies also won the 200 medley (Kuntz, Buffa, Kim, Reynolds) and the 200 free relay (Buffa, Carroll, Kim, Reynolds).

Tyler Auch won diving for Maine West with a nice first-meet score of 190.05.

“The guys look promising,” said Maine West coach Mike Tuntland. “It was not your typical first meet — the guys were serious and meant business.”
