Vernon Hills High collects gifts for Ugandan children

Vernon Hills High School students stacked wrapped shoe boxes filled with gifts for children in Uganda in the school foyer Wednesday.

Nearly 350 boxes were collected as part of the COVE Care Package Program that will help students at the COVE Alliance school, Saint Jerome, in Kapeeka, Uganda.

The holiday charity event was sponsored by the high school's First Class character education program.

“It's really exciting. It is the first year that we've really done a service project like this where it demanded a lot from the students, but they really stepped up and it's really exciting to be able to give kids boxes,” First Class member Katie Frantz explained.

Each shoe box contained basic necessities, such as toothbrush, socks, pencils, as well as toys, candy and a book. etc.

On Thursday at 7:30 p.m., a variety show will be presented in the Vernon Hills High auditorium with the proceeds going to the COVE Alliance program. The show will feature a video of Ugandan students singing the Vernon Hills High School spirit song.
