Police: Health issue caused fatal Elgin crash

A medical issue caused a 79-year-old Elgin man to swerve off the road and hit another car Tuesday, officials said.

Donald L. Dabbert, of the 2200 block of Country Knoll Lane, was pronounced dead Tuesday at Presence St. Joseph Hospital following a crash at the intersection of Airlite Street and Country Knoll Lane, police said in a news release.

The Kane County Coroner conducted an autopsy Wednesday and determined Dabbert died from a pulmonary embolism, according to the news release.

Police and fire responded at about 12:05 p.m. on Tuesday to the two-vehicle crash.

The preliminary investigation shows that Dabbert was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado north on Airlite Street when it sideswiped a 2010 Volkswagen Routan, then struck a parkway tree on the west side of the street, the release stated.

The driver of the Routan, a 39-year-old woman, suffered minor leg injuries and was taken to a hospital.
