Rosemont man gets 15 years for child battery

A 36-year-old Rosemont man who prosecutors say scalded a toddler three years ago pleaded guilty to aggravated battery of a child last month, court records show.

In exchange for his guilty plea to the felony, Santiago Minjarez was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Court records also show Cook County Judge Joel Greenblatt issued an order of protection against Minjarez on behalf of the child and his mother. It will remain in effect until November 2033.

During Minjarez’s bond hearing in November 2010, prosecutors said he held his then 17-month-old stepson under a bathtub faucet after he was unable to stop the child from crying. Minjarez was on parole at the time of his arrest, authorities said. His background includes several convictions for burglary and arson, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.

The boy received physical therapy for his injuries, prosecutors said.
