Elgin man's 9th DUI gets him 7 years in prison

A 36-year-old Elgin man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this month to his ninth DUI, according to court records.

Bruno R. De La Cruz, of the 0-99 block of North Lyle Avenue, pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI, a felony that carried a prison term range of six to 30 years, records show.

De La Cruz was arrested Feb. 28 after a single-vehicle crash at Pamela and Kathleen drives in Elgin, according to court documents.

De La Cruz was at first unresponsive when an officer arrived. He smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests, the arresting officer wrote in his report.

De La Cruz had previous DUI arrests on Jan. 10, 2000; Sept. 2, 2000; Sept. 14, 2002; Oct. 3, 2004; April 9, 2006; Aug. 3, 2006; Aug. 28, 2006, and Feb. 19, 2009, according to court records.

Kane County Judge Thomas Stanfa accepted the plea.

De La Cruz can have his sentence halved for good behavior in prison and will receive credit for the 253 days he spent in jail being held on $750,000 bail. He currently is being held at the Statesville Correctional Center, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
