Time to get your ice fishing gear ready

I was doing the usual sorting of the tackle winter routine in my basement, as well as straightening out some ice fishing equipment, when the telephone rang.

Chip Leer, an angling pro and educator from Walker, Minn., was filled with glee all because his favorite lakes have started to freeze. His call spurred me on to finish getting my own ice gear ready.

But it’s a different story here in the Chicago area. Some spots on the Fox Chain are just starting to become solid fishing platforms.
