Judson seeking submissions for faith-based film festival

Judson University is now accepting film submissions for its 10th annual Imago Film Festival April 1-5 at the university’s Elgin campus.

The Imago Film Festival showcases faith-based independent film emphasizing image and story.

The early deadline for submission is Dec. 15 for a $30 fee. Late entries will be accepted until Feb. 15 for a $40 fee.

Submissions must be less than 30 minutes in length, in DVD format, and deal with images and stories in any filmmaking genre about the spiritual journey of the human experience. Filmmakers may submit multiple entries.

Films will be judged by a panel of local university film and media professors, and professionals in the field.

This year’s film festival will screen original films and feature national speakers. Past speakers have included Ralph Winter, producer of the Star Trek and X-Men film series; David McFadzean, creator of “Home Improvement;” and Phil Vischer, creator of Veggie Tales.

There also will be film discussions, workshops, and an awards ceremony. Prizes for winning films are: Best of Show, $1,000; First Prize (1-15 min), $300; First Prize (15-30 min), $300; Audience Choice Award, $150.

Judson won’t increase tuition: Students planning to attend Judson University next year won’t see an increase in tuition rates for the 2014-2015 academic year, officials said.

According to the College Board’s Trends in College Pricing 2013 report, tuition for private universities and colleges rose 3.8 percent to an average of $30,100 for the 2013-2014 academic year, and a similar increase is predicted for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Judson’s tuition for new and continuing traditional undergraduate students remains at $26,750 for the 2014-15 academic year. Academic and performance-based scholarships and financial aid packages are available for qualifying students.

The Christian liberal-arts and sciences university will be increasing its room and board expenses by one percent to cover the increase in the cost of utilities, while other institutions are projected to increase costs by more than 2 percent for 2014, officials said.

“This action is meant to support the families of our current students, and it shows our commitment to access and affordability,” Judson University President Gene Crume said in a news release.

Roughly 95 percent of Judson students receive financial assistance in the form of merit scholarships, institutional awards and grants, federal and/or state assistance, low-interest student loans and work study, with the average financial aid package being $21,934, officials said.
