Gay marriage supporters hold forums on new law

Advocates who pressed for same-sex marriage to become legal in Illinois are now sponsoring forums to help gay couples understand the law.

Equality Illinois lobbied for the gay marriage bill that Gov. Pat Quinn signed this week.

In a press release Thursday, Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov says the group already has been “flooded” with questions from couples who want to marry.

The first forum was Thursday night in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. Additional forums are scheduled statewide in coming weeks.

Among the topics to be covered are how to convert a civil union into a marriage and how couples married in other states will be treated under Illinois’ law, which takes effect June 1.

Participants are urged to register in advance.
