Elgin man gives his service dog a workout

Monday’s mostly sunny 40-degree weather was more seasonal — and a welcome departure — from Sunday’s storms.

Miguel Martinez of Elgin took some time out of his day to throw a ball to Marley, his family’s dog, at Wing Park.

Marley is a service dog who helps Martinez’s young daughter who suffers with Rett syndrome.

The family has had Marley for about a year after acquiring her from MidAmerica Service Dogs in Hinsdale. Marley was trained by inmates at the Dwight Correctional Center as part of the Helping Paws program.

The facility, southwest of Joliet, closed earlier this year.
