Savegnago head to state

Marisa Savegnago is going to finish her high school girls swimming senior season at the place everyone in the state wants to be — the IHSA Finals in New Trier.

A Glenbard North senior, Savegnago earned her spot in Friday’s prelims when she qualified in two events at the St. Charles East sectional on Saturday. Savegnago won the 100-yard freestyle and was third in the 100 backstroke. For Savegnago this year’s qualification is the second in as many years from the Glenbard co-op swim team that involves both Glenbard North and Glenbard East — though all the team’s swimmers this year are from Glenbard North.

“Our team’s been so tight — it’s been our best year,” Savegnago said.

Savegnago’s qualification in the 100 backstroke was the only such swim to not come from the final heat in Saturday’s sectional. Ahead by more than a body length for the second half of the race, Savegnago had to drive herself to swim faster than the state qualifying time.

“I just knew I needed to get out in front of the rest of the swimmers and kill it for the rest of the race,” Savegnago said.

Though they didn’t qualify for the state finals, Glenbard North’s 200 medley relay of Savegnago, Emily Park, Danielle Homere and Kathleen Accord set the stage for the afternoon’s successes.

“We weren’t expecting to go as fast as we did, so that was exciting for us,” Savegnago said. “That got us off to a great start.”

Homere, another Glenbard North senior, qualified with Savegnago in the 100 butterfly.

“It’s the first time we’ve both made it,” Savegnago said. “For our senior year, that’s great for us to go together.”
