Northbrook Court evacuated for gas leak

By Jake Griffin

An upscale mall in Northbrook was evacuated for about an hour Saturday afternoon because of a gas leak.

Northbrook Court security evacuated shops at about 2:30 p.m., according to Julia Hawthorne, an employee of the women's clothing boutique Cusp.

Hawthorne said the evacuation was orderly, and employees and die-hard shoppers stayed outside the mall entrances until they were allowed to go back inside.

Mall officials could not be reached for comment and security personnel referred questions to the mall's marketing department. It's unknown what caused the gas leak.

Hawthorne said she never smelled the gas from where she was located but was told the leak was somewhere near the movie theaters.
