As a part of its philanthropic mission, Accretive Health employees founded an organization dedicated to charitable giving, with Accretive Health, Inc., providing an initial financial endowment. Accretive Helping Hands was launched in December 2012 as a new avenue for Accretive Health's 1,750 U.S. employees to extend their volunteerism. Accretive Helping Hands helps patients and their families navigate the difficulties encountered after treatment by partnering with community healthcare and social work providers. In October, Accretive Helping Hands volunteers who work at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., served meals and cleaned at Camp Bluebird, Sacred Heart Health System's retreat for adults with cancer.

Camp Bluebird is a three-day, two-night retreat where adults with cancer relax and recreate. This semi-annual camp is staffed with volunteers who donate their time to making the camper experience a memorable one. During the retreat, adults are offered small group meetings, "doc-in-the-box" (local doctors available for question and answer sessions), arts and crafts, self-help sessions, and pampering sessions, such as massages and facials.

"We always want to volunteer at this retreat because we really enjoy our time with the campers," said Julie Saucer, an Accretive Health employee and Accretive Helping Hands volunteer.

"This is the second time our team has volunteered at Camp Bluebird, and it is always a special event," added Saucer. "It is so nice to come together outside of the workplace as volunteers and friends to help others."
