Guns found in Northern Illinois University dorm

DEKALB, Ill. -- A Tinley Park man is free on $40,000 bond after police said they found guns and body armor in his Northern Illinois University dorm room.

NIU Police Chief Thomas Phillips said Wednesday a worker sorting mail at the New Hall West residence hall called police after she found a package containing gun parts addressed to Kevin Ouwenga.

A search of the 29-year-old Ouwenga's room by university police turned up a disassembled AR-15 rifle and a .40-caliber Glock handgun, as well as ammunition and body armor, authorities said.

According to Phillips, Ouwenga said he was unaware guns are banned from all Illinois school campuses.

Ouwenga is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a stored weapon.

Phillips said Ouwenga is barred from campus.
