Christian Liberty hits the road for 2A sectional semi

Christian Liberty Academy’s co-op girls volleyball team travels to the South Beloit sectional Tuesday night hoping to extend its season in the Class 2A state tournament.

After winning Class 1A regional titles in 2010 and 2011, the Chargers won their first 2A crown last week.

They defeated Woodlands Academy 24-26, 25-20, 25-15 in the championship of the Willows Academy regional in Des Plaines.

CLA (24-11) will play in its first 2A sectional semifinal against Oregon at 6 p.m.

The Oregon Lady Hawks won their own regional, defeating Rockford Lutheran 25-20, 25-22 to claim a ninth regional title in 11 years.

Christian Liberty has three regional titles in four years.

Senior Vivian Barclay and sophomore Cassie Swiderek led the attack in the regional final, taking their cues from senior setter Jenna Pavlik.

“The girls are looking forward to the matchup with Oregon,” said Chargers coach Natalie Salsgiver, whose team lost in the 2A regional championship match last season. “We are excited for the challenge.”

Salsgiver said her team will need strong net play today to advance to its first 2A sectional title match.

“I am very proud of my girls,” the coach added. “Their hard work and perseverance paid off this season. We have come together as a team ready to play ball.

“We have an offense ready to play the net and a defense ready to pick up whatever comes its way. We look at this as a challenge we are ready for.”
