All week, authorities from around the state have been conducting compliance checks at the homes of registered sex offenders and those will continue throughout the night.

Madigan said sex offenders on parole, mandatory supervised release or probation are prohibited from distributing candy or other items to children on Halloween. Her office also established a toll-free hotline -- 1-888-414-7678 -- for the public and other law enforcement to use if they have questions or tips about noncompliant sex offenders.

As of this month, Illinois has more than 26,000 registered sex offenders.
