Madigan: Check sex offender list before trick or treating

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says parents should check the state's sex offender registry before sending kids out trick-or-treating tonight.

Madigan also noted that many county and local law enforcement agencies also keep sex offender registries online. The state's online sex offender registry can be found at isp.state.il.us.

All week, authorities from around the state have been conducting compliance checks at the homes of registered sex offenders and those will continue throughout the night.

Madigan said sex offenders on parole, mandatory supervised release or probation are prohibited from distributing candy or other items to children on Halloween. Her office also established a toll-free hotline — 1-888-414-7678 — for the public and other law enforcement to use if they have questions or tips about noncompliant sex offenders.

As of this month, Illinois has more than 26,000 registered sex offenders.
