Illinois St. beats South Dakota 28-14

NORMAL, Ill. — Blake Winkler only completed nine passes, but three of them were for touchdowns as Illinois State beat South Dakota 28-14 Saturday.

Winkler would open the scoring by finding Corey Shandrick for a 33-yard touchdown in the first quarter. South Dakota (4-4, 3-2 Missouri Valley) responded as Jordan’s Roberts’ 22-yard run capped a 91-yard touchdown drive.

Winkler found Phil Dudley from 43 yards and Scott Kuehn from 35 yards to give the Redbirds (4-4, 3-2) a 21-7 half time lead.

Marshaun Coprich finished with 108 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries for the Redbirds. Winkler went 9 of 20 for 181 yards and also threw two interceptions.

South Dakota’s Kevin Earl, who accounted for five touchdowns last week, was held largely in check. He went 22 of 47 for 256 yards and a score while rushing for 30 yards on six carries. He also threw two interceptions.
