The Vernon Hills police department hosts its third Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Visitors can bring medications for disposal to the department, 740 Lakeview Parkway for this free and anonymous service. The national event, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), allows the public to rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. To date, more than 2.8 million pounds (1,409 tons) of prescription medications have been removed from circulation since the take-back initiative began three years ago. Medicines that sit in home cabinets are susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse, according to police and rates of prescription drug abuse, accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs are high. A list of acceptable and unacceptable items can be found at www.vhpd.com or call (847) 247-4889.Copyright © 2014 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
