Schneider and Dold financial reports list interesting campaign supporters

In what’s shaping up to be an expensive suburban rematch, Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider and likely Republican challenger Robert Dold received financial support from a bevy of political heavy hitters and high-profile organizations this past quarter, records show.

Schneider, a freshman lawmaker from Deerfield, received dozens of donations totaling thousands of dollars through the Democratic Party fundraising organization Act Blue, his latest Federal Election Commission disclosure report indicated. A former U.S. Senator and a handful of corporations cut Schneider checks, too.

Overall, Schneider reported collecting roughly $364,230 during the period.

As for Dold, a former congressman from Kenilworth who narrowly lost the 10th District seat to Schneider in 2012, one of his biggest backers during the quarter was Illinois GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner.

Rauner, of Winnetka, made two donations totaling $5,200, Dold’s report showed. Rauner’s wife, Diana, kicked in another $5,200.

Dold also received checks from a former astronaut, GOP groups and a member of one of Chicago’s most prominent families.

Overall, Team Dold received $314,974 in donations from supporters during the period.

Candidates for national office must regularly file campaign disclosure forms with the FEC. They’re viewable at www.fec.gov.

Under U.S. law, individuals can donate up to $2,600 per federal candidate, per election. So, someone can give a candidate $2,600 toward a primary campaign and an additional $2,600 for the general race held later that year.

Political committees generally are limited to $5,000 donations per election.

The latest reports were delivered last week and cover receipts and expenses recorded between July 1 and Sept. 30.

In addition to the money that came in through Act Blue, Schneider’s campaign reported donations from sources including:

Ÿ Former U.S. Sen. Adlai E. Stevenson III of Chicago, who gave $500.

Ÿ The political action committee for Comcast Corp. and NBCUniversal, which gave $1,500.

Ÿ Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, which gave $2,000 through its political action committee.

Ÿ Exelon’s political action committee, which gave $1,500.

Ÿ The Goldman Sachs investment banking group, which gave $1,000 through its political committee.

Schneider’s campaign reported spending an estimated $101,688 during the three-month period. It has collected more than $1.2 million over the entire campaign so far. It ended September with about $768,910 in the bank.

Dold is looking to recapture the seat he lost to Schneider by just 1 percentage point in 2012, thanks in part to a strong early-voting effort that put the Democrat over the top after Election Day ballots were counted.

In addition to the Rauners, Dold’s supporters last quarter included:

Ÿ Andrew J. McKenna, the CEO of Schwarz Paper and the father of former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andrew J. McKenna Jr. He donated $2,600.

Ÿ Thomas J. Pritzker, CEO of the Pritzker Organization and a member of the notably philanthropic family, who donated $5,200.

Ÿ Retired astronaut James A. Lovell, who donated $500.

Ÿ The ConservAmerica political action committee, a pro-environment Republican group, which gave $2,300.

Ÿ Hospira Inc.’s political action committee, which gave $1,000 on behalf of the pharmaceutical company.

Dold’s campaign reported spending an estimated $110,905 during the quarter. It has collected an estimated $862,179 over the entire campaign so far. It ended September with about $819,153 saved.

The 10th District covers much of eastern and central Lake County and a portion of northern Cook County.

The March 18 primary election will determine candidates in the November 2014 general showdown. So far, Schneider and Dold are the only announced contenders in the 10th District.
