Illinois seniors can get help with Medicare enrollment

The Illinois Department on Aging says seniors and disabled people can get free help enrolling in Medicare.

Agency Director John. K. Holton says the counseling assistance is available for participants and their caregivers through Dec. 7. Open enrollment began Tuesday.

Counselors from the agency’s Senior Health Insurance Program will help beneficiaries and caregivers understand their options. They can explain drug, health, and supplemental plan and paperwork associated with the program. They also can help file Medicare appeals.

Holton says the annual open enrollment period is the time to review Medicare Part D, the Medicare Advantage plan or to ensure current coverage is working.

He says people should not confuse the Medicare enrollment with enrollment under the nation’s new health care law.

The help hotline is 800-548-9034.
