The College of DuPage men's basketball team officially starts its season Nov. 2, but new Chaparral head Coach Earl Reed is busy finalizing his roster and sizing up the competition.
Reed replaces Don Klaas, who retired after 35 years as head coach. During his tenure at COD, Klaas amassed a 743-382 career and was ranked first in wins among Division III coaches in the National Junior College Athletic Association. During the 2001-2002 season, Klaas led the Chaparrals to win the Division III National Championship, and he is a member of the NJCAA Hall of Fame, the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Hall of Fame.
With a practice schedule under way, Reed, who was a member of Klaas' coaching team, said he's having a relatively easy transition.
"I feel honored to take over for a coaching legend," Reed said of Klaas. "Right now we're finalizing our roster and getting the team together for practices, but I'm optimistic looking forward."
Reed has worn many hats during his tenure at the College. He served as head coach of the women's basketball team for 12 years and also served as associate dean for the Physical Education program.
"This is a great opportunity for me to continue with our players and see where I can take us," he said. "Last season, we lost some close games. My goal is to maintain the team's performance both academically and on the court. It feels good to be gearing up for another season."
