Addison Trail makes it two straight wins

Saturday afternoon’s football game, which Addison Trail won 52-28, showed that even with their playoff chances evaporated, both the visiting Blazers and Proviso East had a lot to play for in Week 7 of the season.

Addison Trail was looking for its second consecutive win as it tries to finish out 2013 with the best possible record. Meanwhile, Proviso East, which scored a season-high 28 points for the second consecutive week, was looking for its first victory of the season.

“Fifty-two points is not easy to come by. We executed and did what was necessary on offense,” said Blazers coach Paul Parpet. “We’ve been dealt some bad cards this season, but we’re trying to finish out the year strong.”

The Blazers (2-5, 2-3 West Suburban Gold) racked up 365 yards of offense, including 186 through the air from quarterback Mike Rybarczyk, who threw 3 touchdown passes. Two of them were caught by Jake Atiyeh.

Jim Wislek led things on the ground with 122 yards on 17 carries and ran for 2 touchdowns.

“This feels good, our second win in a row,” Rybarczyk said. “We’ve come together as a team the last two weeks and this gives us momentum going against Glenbard West (Addison Trail’s home finale next Friday).”

Proviso East (0-7, 0-4) benefited from a 50-yard kickoff return by Jimmy Walker to begin the second half and that put the Pirates on the Blazers’ 11-yard line. Griffin ran it in from the 2 four plays later on a quarterback keeper to pull to within 31-28.

Parpet said Addison Trail didn’t do anything different in facing a Proviso East offense that’s been the strongest it’s been all season. He said it was simply a case of being prepared.

“They have speed, weapons and are dangerous. They put athletes out into the open spaces and we did what we could to contain them,” Parpet said.

After Griffin’s touchdown Addison Trail responded with 21 unanswered points and sped away with the victory.

“In the first half we were in control. But in the second half we settled down and the game was ours,” Rybarczyk said.

The Blazers’ Marc Anemore recovered a fumble that led to Julian Singh’s 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. Anthony Nasti caught a touchdown pass for Addison Trail and Ricky Luna closed out the scoring with a 2-yard TD run.
