Prairie Ridge puts Dundee-Crown playoff plans on hold

The celebration in Carpentersville will have to wait at least a week.

Gunning for its first playoff berth since 1994, Dundee-Crown’s hopes were put on hold by Prairie Ridge Friday night when the Wolves steamrollered the Chargers 42-0 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Crystal Lake.

“I really think the kids felt the pressure of making the playoffs,” said D-C coach Vito Andriola. “This is uncharted territory for these kids and this program. We don’t defend the option very well and they just beat us with the run. Give Prairie Ridge credit and they had revenge on their mind and played hard. The better team won tonight.”

The Chargers’ defense was simply overwhelmed by the PR (3-4, 2-3) option attack as the Wolves managed 428 yards rushing with 3 backs garnering over 100 yards.

Prairie Ridge quarterback Brett Covalt shredded the D-C defense for 103 yards and touchdown runs of 1, 4 and 32 yards.

“It was Brett’s best game of the year and our team’s best effort of the season,” said Wolves coach Chris Schremp. “Brett did a great job of reading the defense and we blocked very well. The kids did a great job of refocusing after a bad game at Huntley last week.’’

Joining Covalt in the 100-yard club were Brett Anderson with 126 yards on 9 carries and Zack Greenberg with 112 yards on 11 carries and a 41-yard TD run.

Steven Ladd, making his first appearance since the first game of the season, had a productive night for PR as well. The senior back rushed 6 times for 87 yards and a 35-yard TD. Off the halfback pass, Ladd threw a perfect strike to Danny Meikel for a 24-yard score.

“It is great to have Steven back,” said Schremp. “He is an excellent back and a very versatile back.”

Scoring on all 4 possessions of the first half, the Wolves scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters to gain control of the game with a 28-0 lead at intermission.

Covalt scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards and Ladd scored on a 35-yard and threw a 24-yard pass to Meikel.

D-C (5-2, 2-2), which managed only 7 first downs, compiled 156 yards of total offense, 117 yards rushing and 39 yards passing. Caleb Parson led the rushing attack with 82 yards on 20 carries, Quarterback Jeff Atherton completed 4-of-9 passes for 39 yards.
