CTA delaying phase out of old fare cards

The Chicago Transit Authority's troubled effort to roll out a new fare collection system has forced the agency to restore fare options it discontinued earlier this week.

CTA officials said Wednesday the agency will again sell magnetic stripe cards. Chicago Card holders will also be allowed to reload money on their cards.

The CTA has been trying to encourage riders to make a switch to Ventra, a card that allows transit riders to tap the card against a reader, instead of inserting it into a fare slot.

Ventra card users have complained about glitches and the inability to get their problems solved in customer service calls.

CTA President Forrest Claypool says Ventra vendor Cubic Transportation in coming weeks will increase operators at its customer service call centers.
