Another big night for St. Edward’s Elam
It was home sweet homecoming for St. Edward Friday night.
The Green Wave scored on every possession but one in the first half and rolled to a 53-6 Suburban Christian Blue win over Chicago Christian at Greg True Field in Elgin. The Wave rushed for 269 yards on the evening. Of those 269-yards, 228 of them belonged to DaVontae Elam, who became the first Green Wave running back to rush for more than 1,000 yards since 2003.
“I knew going into the game that I had the chance to do something special,” said a visibly beaming Elam after the game. “I have to give a ton of credit to my line. They are amazing. They make the holes, I just run through them.”
Elam scored on touchdown runs of 4, 12, 10, 43 and 58 yards. But as Green Wave coach Mike Rolando said, he had a lot of help.
“What makes Elam even better is that he had a great line and pieces that make him better. Having a guy like Mikey (Castoro), who is a threat in the passing game, keeps teams from stacking the box. We have more than one guy that needs to be accounted for. When teams follow DaVontae, we have other options. We can also counter with another good back in Dwayne Allen,” Rolando said.
Rolando was also thrilled with the play of junior quarterback Joe Mullen.
“Mullen is doing everything we ask of him,” said Rolando. “He has really calmed down since taking over and he is very efficient.”
It wasn’t all daisies for St. Edward. As good as the defense looked, allowing only 6 points and 150 yards of total offense, 60 of those yards came on penalties.
“We need to clean things up. We had some penalties that gave them free yards. We weren’t smart enough sometimes,” Rolando said.
With the win, St. Edward moved to 4-2 on the season. A win at home against Wheaton Academy next week will make the Green Wave playoff eligible.
Mullen was 5-for-8 for 119 yards passing and a TD. Castoro caught all 5 of those passes, including a 51-yard bomb in the first quarter for a touchdown
In addition to Elam’s impressive night on the ground, Allen added a 41-yard touchdown of his own. Junior kicker Joe French also added a 28-yard field goal.
