Hynek, Hinsdale South pick off a win at Leyden

Hinsdale South came into Leyden looking to feed off of their defense behind all-conference defensive linemen Antanas Riskus.

The Hornets did just that in a 26–3 rout of the Eagles, and Riskus wasn’t the one the Eagles had to worry about.

Junior linebacker Jake Hynek single-handedly jumpstarted the Hornets scoring opportunities with a one handed interception that led to a 32-yard touchdown run by Robert Hall just 29 seconds later.

Hinsdale South improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the West Suburban Gold.

“The message the whole week was to get turnovers and our goal is to always put a zero on the board,” Hynek said of his defense only allowing 3 points.

Hynek had also had an interception in the second quarter, which led to a touchdown from junior quarterback Robert Regan. And Hynek had help on the offensive side of the ball from running backs Michael Fassero (15 rushes for 79 yards), Robert Hall (19 rushes for 95 yards; TD) and Alex Holmstrom (7 rushes for 43 yards; TD) for a combined total of 217 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns.

“We always say we want to be a 50/50 team but sometimes that doesn’t always happen,” said Hindale South coach Mike Barry. “We thought the longer we could keep our defense off the field, we would have a good chance to win.”

Leyden (1-5, 1-2), which was only able to total 149 yards of offense, was eliminated from playoff contention.

“I think they outplayed us in just about every aspect of the game tonight,” Leyden coach Tom Cerasani said.

Cerasani said his expectations for these next three games will not change. He expects his team to still work hard in practice to finish the season on a high note.

“The last three games are for the seniors,” he said. “We talked about sticking together as a team and finishing the year out strong.”
